Laying Down
The Law
I love autumn. Sunshine, cooler air, beautiful colours, fall fash-ion,
hot drinks – it’s a beautiful time of year. But one of the
best things about autumn for me is the October issue of HR
Professional, our annual HR Law themed edition – and my fa-vourite
issue every year.
In years past, our law issue focused its feature articles and one or
two other supplementary articles on different “hot topics” in employ-ment
law. We’ve talked about sexual harassment in the workplace,
the evolution of workplace human rights and much more. Since
2017 has brought with it 12 editions of HR Professional (up from
the previous eight issues each year), I decided that for this October
edition, we’d focus every single article on a different topic that em-ployment
lawyers say their clients are worried about.
In this issue, read about Bill 148 (arguably the biggest topic
amongst clients, according to employment lawyers, hence its po-sition
as our cover feature); Bill 127; what to do if you discover a
Neo-Nazi in your workforce; how to impress your CFO by limiting
severance obligations; how impending marijuana legalization will
affect your workplace; and so much more. There’s something for ev-eryone
to learn in this issue. And if you want to learn more, HRPA’s
annual Law Conference is on Oct. 19 this year.
I offer my sincerest gratitude to the stellar line-up of employment
lawyers who took the time to offer opinions and write articles for
this issue. That includes Jason Beeho (our legal representative on the
HR Professional Editorial Advisory Board); David Whitten (HRPA
Law Conference co-chair); James Heeney (HRPA Law Conference
co-chair); Laura Williams; Patrizia Piccolo; Hendrik Nieuwland;
Stuart Rudner; Brittany Taylor; Daniel Chodos; Michael Horvat;
Kathleen Chevalier; Alex Lemoine; and Naumaan Hameed. Alison
Grenier with Great Place to Work Canada wrote about whether
anti-discrimination law creates inclusive workplaces. Michael Bach
of the Canadian Institute for Diversity and Inclusion wrote an arti-cle
about diversity in Canada’s legal profession.
If you have follow-up questions on any of the articles in this issue,
please send me an email and I can connect you to the article’s author.
As always, I hope you enjoy this issue of HR Professional as
much I enjoyed putting it together for you. If you aren’t already, be
sure to follow us on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook.
Happy reading,
Jill Harris
